Funded PhD Studentships


The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has several funded studentships available and strong applicants will be encouraged to put themselves forward for one of these studentships once they have been accepted as potential students in the EIS@Essex Lab.


The director of the EIS@Essex Lab, Prof Klaus McDonald-Maier, is one of the supervisors in the EPSRC sponsored IGGI Centre for Doctoral Training in the area of embedded systems (which covers games hardware/software systems, sensors and interfacing technologies), novel hardware architectures for games and measuring emotional and physiological signals.

We are currently seeking suitable candidates in these areas under the embodied interaction theme of the IGGI Centre:

Embodied interaction

This theme covers whole body interaction and involves the following technologies:

  • Brain-computer interaction
  • Other physiological biosignal interfaces
  • Motion capture systems
  • New products like the Leap Motion
  • Consumer devices like Microsoft Kinect
  • Embedded sensors on mobile technologies (e.g. smartphone accelerometers)

PhD / MSc by Research Studies

  • PhD / MSc Studies in the EIS Research Group: If you have the excellent grades, then you might be eligible for a PhD (or research MSc) in the EIS Group. In order to apply please send Prof McDonald-Maier (in files under 1 Meg in total), (a) your CV, (b) transcripts of your grades, (c) copies of papers you have published, (d) a project proposal linked to my research projects and interests and (e) the name of two referees.
